Ground and space mission operations software

The Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is an integral field spectroscopy survey, part of the fifth iteration of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Over then next five years the LVM aims to obtain optical and NIR spectroscopy of nearly 1 steradian of sky using four small 160mm telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. LVM has recently started its commissioning and science verification and expects to go into full robotic operations later this year. In this talk I will introduce the LVM telescope system and instrument with special emphasis on its cyber-infrastructure, as well as the strategies followed for software development and deployment. In particular, I will discuss our computing and network choice and the use of Kubernetes clusters to deploy highly multiplexed software in multiple hosts, as well as the lessons learned interacting with physical instrumentation. Finally, I will describe the challenges presented by robotisation and the approach we have followed during design, integration, and commissioning.
